Lactarius torminosus – Wooly Milk Cup

From torminosus (lat) = That causes colic or stomach pain.
Common name = Wooly Milk Cup

CAP: 4 to 10 cm in diameter, convex then flat, flesh-pink colour, red-pink, with reddish concentric rings, velvety or woolly, woolly and rolled margin. Cuticle that is hard to separate.

GILLS: Initially white, then creamy with a pinkish hue, tight, fine, with lamelules, rather decurrent.

STEM: Whitish to flesh-pink, full, then hollow, cylindrical or rather narrow at the base, sometimes scrobiculate.

FLESH: Thick, hard, fruity smell, spicy flavour, whitish or flesh-pink. White latex, spicy.

HABITAT: Spring and autumn under birch trees.

EDIBILITY: Poisonous and causes stomach upsets.

OBSERVATIONS: It can be confused with L.deliciosus (Saffron Milk Cap), but this is only exclusively under pine forests and L.torminosus under beech trees and the latex is white.
